Update 2018

Long time no type! It's been almost two years since I've graduated from Art school and in that time I worked at a silk screening warehouse for, got surgery, and then worked at Tandy Leather Factory for 10 months. I also started working as a studio assistant with Natalie Gerber at C Space in Calgary.

Now I am working solely at C Space and I am Itching to delve into the art world. You can expect leather work, written word, and fibre art from me in the next few months, so keep an eye out!

Last Semester at Art School

It's been a while! Well this semester has started very well! I have lots of plans for work to make including hand printed pillows, plates galore, lots of sculpture and maybe even some reupholstering of the chairs that I used for my final performance last semester.

last semester I did a LOT of performance work, which was a huge turning point in my practice. I am working with topics of wealth, gluttony, pride and decadence now which will come forward in collage and ceramic sculpture. My first large work this semester is a bust of my friend Joel, which takes inspiration from Gustav Klimt's The Kiss ( I had the opportunity to see some of Klimt's work in Vienna and some of his imagery has found its way into my work, such as my performance Ophelia)
I have this semester packed with assignments, projects, show and sale, and my grad paper but I will try to keep you as updated as I can as I finish up my last semester before graduation on May 19th. I will be having lots of shows in April and May, plus the show and sale, so keep a look out for more information.

The best way to keep in the look with everything I am doing is through my Instagram, or Facebook

And if you have any questions, please send me a message at jennifer.hartley42@gmail.com
April 4-15 I will be doing an endurance performance piece in the Marion Nicoll Gallery at ACAD. For 11 days I will spend 12 hours in the gallery, separating myself from secular society in order to focus on my personal and spiritual growth. I will spend my days practicing my cello, singing, dancing, making art, and reading. This performance will be a rite or passage for me between the life of being a Student of Art, and being an Artist.

at the end of last semester I also did some custom settings for a few friends for Christmas gifts. Also, this past weekend I had the opportunity to design the center pieces for my Church's West Stake Calgary Women's conference. I appreciate all of the help from the sister missionaries who helped set up, they did a wonderful job!

The Contextual Fibre Arts Show  went very well and I was happy to meet those who showed up to view my work. And more shout out to all my friends who modeled for me, It really help my piece come together!

This Semester started off in a mad rush of classes, student groups, and getting my schedule organized, in addition to the always-loved doctor appointments. It's about three weeks into my fourth and final year at ACAD and I have come to a lot of conclusions:
  1. I have a lot of ideas (possibly too many but here are a few basic ideas) --ceramic wall pieces with contrast between feminine and masculine traits -incorporating fabric or metal?--sculpted busts of myself and some peers--performance work about mental states/illness, and anxiety--a bronze piece about depression
  2. I took on too many classes and as a result I will be dropping my 400 level ceramics class to free up some time in my schedule to work efficiently and without unnecessary stress.
  3. My friends are an amazing support to me and I am extremely grateful for their help and kindness.

What's Next?
I am heading off to the 1000 Miles apart Conference in Winnipeg October 1-3rd!!!!!
I am so excited to be heading over there with my friend Mabel who will be flying with me and sharing a room with me at the motel (Prepare for silly selfies on Instagram).  there will be a bunch of amazing demos and talks given over those few days and I am really looking forward to see what inspiration i get from the artists. I have one of my new carved vessels in the show there and I will take photos as proof!

I also had the amazing experience to attend #Campfest15 which included some amazing speakers in the art and design fields. I can honestly say that those talks will change the way I think about my work and the future of my artistic practice.

Ceramics, a Residency and Two Gangs

7/13/2015

This summer Is fast on its way out the door and that realization has kicking me into gear. So far this summer I have been working on commissions, carving vases, and getting my fill of silk screening among other things, so strap in for an update!

I just finished a two sets of 12 dishes for Chris Lorenz at Taste, so now they have left the nest and are the backdrop for some amazing food!

I started the summer by starting on this set of dishes, sewing away my free time, and organizing all the notes i took last semester in my sketch book.
This summer I also finished my first dress, which lead me into the excitement of more sewing projects to come, including skirts, and ringmaster pants.

seeing the opportunity to explore fabrics further, I applied for the Contextural Fibre Residency that takes place at ACAD, and to my joy I was accepted for the three month residency. Which means I get my own studio space and free reign of the studios in the fibre department!

I've had lots of ideas coming to mind of things I could print, however, I started fleshing out an idea that has been at the back of my mind for quite a while.
I knew that this summer I had a lot of projects that I wanted to work on, including a set of carved pots, so I started throwing steadily larger pieces , and practicing my carving on them.

Once the first set was fired, I experimented with some of the glazes that the studio had to offer, and I plan to further explore with the next set of pots, which are much bigger than the first set.

If you would like to purchase any of these pots, send me a line at jennifer.hartley42@gmail.com
I am currently making props and printing patches for a story surrounding a gang and their rival. The props will be shown through photographs that will resemble film stills of a film that never existed.

This project will focus on gang culture, youth rebellion, and the absurdity that follows. Some of the props and branding will include made up products like Charades Candy Cigarettes, Yellow Belly Root Beer, Jennifer H's Quality Apple Juice, and Travesty All-Stars Sneakers. Temporary tattoos will also be making an appearance.

If you want to join my gang, drop me a line at jennifer.hartley42@gmail.com I would love to have your help!
Wish me luck as I keep trekking forwards in art, self care, and personal progression this summer!
Also, Thank you to all those who follow my many social media accounts, your comments and likes are always an encouragement to me.

Armour and Chivalry Update

3/8/2015

I have been working like mad on a few sets of armour. One is ceramic and consists of a scale mail jerkin and a sword that says " Self Care" in Norse runes on the blade. Each scale has a design of a body part on it (nose, stomach, eye, heart, brain, ear, and hand) to represent mental illness as being a physical, tangible illness that effects many parts of the body besides the brain. The scales are currently being sewn onto a thick cotton twill shirt that is sized to fit me. I hope to be able to finish my ceramic sword in time which still needs to be glaze fired. The critique for this piece is on Wednesday 11th and the show opening is on Thursday 19th at 5:30 which you are all invited to attend!

I have also been working on a fabric suit of armour which I critiqued this past Wednesday. The piece is about feminism and the critique about sexism in the middle ages and its connection to contemporary society. It is also a reclamation of the suit of armour as a gender neutral outfit and symbol. It took a lot of work and I am so proud of where I am with it right now! I still need to make a helmet, sword and shield before I can take on-site photos around Calgary.
I am pleased with the direction my work is taking and I am excited for everything that has been rolling around in my head on the topics of costume, feminism, knighthood, mental illness and childhood. Look out for some more cool stuff coming up!

2015 Winter Update

Hello again! It has been a while, but I am back in the saddle for the second half of my third year of my BFA. I was sick for almost a week, which has put me behind in school work, but I am catching up quickly. If you are interested in the projects I have up my sleeve, stay tuned!

I have been granted the position as one of the student Artist in Residence's at ACAD, which means I am making work based of the topic of mental health awareness, specifically Anxiety Disorders and Depression. For the project, I am making ceramic armor using geometric scales that will be individually sewn onto a thick fabric or thin leather jerkin/shirt. I would also like to make a ceramic sword and helmet if time allows me to.

Once the armor is complete I will be taking photographs of my friends who suffer from Anxiety and/or Depression wearing the armor to depict them as heroes and heroins of their own mental well-being.  I haves asked these volunteers to write a statement on how their experience Mental Illness and what effect it has had on their lives.
For my classes, I have a sculpture research class, interdisciplinary humanities, a video course (we get to use Super 8 cameras and 8mm film?!), a glaze and clay science course, and a sculpture studio. For my sculpture body of work this semester I am focusing on wearable art. While I have a number of projects planned out, my first one will be... A FABRIC  SUIT OF ARMOUR! I have been making patterns and I just got my dress form in the mail, so I can begin my sewing in earnest!

Holiday Update

I have been posting a lot of photos of ceramics, sculpture and more projects from this past semester, all of which are now up in my portfolio.

This semester was a tough one, where I was transitioning from project-based learning to self-directed studio work. I also had some personal hardships that presented themselves in my life, making it harder to complete school assignments for a number of weeks.

But over all things have gotten much better and I look forward to the new year!

This past semester I sold my work at ACAD's Show and Sale, where I sold 15/20 pieces so THANK YOU for your support and patronage! I had a great time volunteering for the show and it was nice to see so many people attending from outside the school.

I was approached by the Edmonton Potterwatch about a charity silent auction, and they asked If I could make a few Harry Potter props to donate. Harry potter, charity: that is my jam. So I said yes and made the Elder Wand complete with a custom box and certificate, in addition I made a Deathly Hallows Necklace.

I was then approached by an aquaintence who wanted their own replica wand, which I made and sold to him.
If you are interested in buying any replica wand, please fill out a Commissions Form. Standard price is $120.
Recently, I was  made aware that I have received the llingworth Kerr Bursary from ACAD, which is a huge honor and financial blessing. In addition, I have been accepted into the AIR program which is an initiative towards Mental Health awareness at my school, which provides me with $500 to make a work of art that focuses on a mental illness of my choosing. I have decided to make ceramic armor to represent the battle one experiences between illness and the self when one has anxiety and/or depression. this project is deeply personal to me and I am excited to get to work on it.

So, Summer is over and Fall is making it's way across the cityscape, taking tree branches with it. I am back in school for my third year, and I had a slow start, but I am beginning to pick up the pace, one day at a time.

A few weeks back I quit my job at Chicago Chophouse because I feel like it is time for me to focus on my practice, immersing myself in the art culture, having a social life and also self-care.  I loved my time at the restaurant and I enjoyed getting to know my coworkers, even if it was only for a few months.

I have a LOT of goals for things to do/make this semester, so I have no excuses:

  • Prop replicas to sell at comic expos
  • PLATES
  • Jewellery that I have been planning for months
  • Art videos
  • Dolls
  • Fabric Printing
  • Sewing

What would YOU like to see more of?
