Hello again! It has been a while, but I am back in the saddle for the second half of my third year of my BFA. I was sick for almost a week, which has put me behind in school work, but I am catching up quickly. If you are interested in the projects I have up my sleeve, stay tuned! I have been granted the position as one of the student Artist in Residence's at ACAD, which means I am making work based of the topic of mental health awareness, specifically Anxiety Disorders and Depression. For the project, I am making ceramic armor using geometric scales that will be individually sewn onto a thick fabric or thin leather jerkin/shirt. I would also like to make a ceramic sword and helmet if time allows me to.
For my classes, I have a sculpture research class, interdisciplinary humanities, a video course (we get to use Super 8 cameras and 8mm film?!), a glaze and clay science course, and a sculpture studio. For my sculpture body of work this semester I am focusing on wearable art. While I have a number of projects planned out, my first one will be... A FABRIC SUIT OF ARMOUR! I have been making patterns and I just got my dress form in the mail, so I can begin my sewing in earnest!
Recently, I was made aware that I have received the llingworth Kerr Bursary from ACAD, which is a huge honor and financial blessing. In addition, I have been accepted into the AIR program which is an initiative towards Mental Health awareness at my school, which provides me with $500 to make a work of art that focuses on a mental illness of my choosing. I have decided to make ceramic armor to represent the battle one experiences between illness and the self when one has anxiety and/or depression. this project is deeply personal to me and I am excited to get to work on it.
So, Summer is over and Fall is making it's way across the cityscape, taking tree branches with it. I am back in school for my third year, and I had a slow start, but I am beginning to pick up the pace, one day at a time.
A few weeks back I quit my job at Chicago Chophouse because I feel like it is time for me to focus on my practice, immersing myself in the art culture, having a social life and also self-care. I loved my time at the restaurant and I enjoyed getting to know my coworkers, even if it was only for a few months. I have a LOT of goals for things to do/make this semester, so I have no excuses:
